Winter Solstice
Rarely do we think of winter as a time of renewal, more like one of reflection. But I've never done things the usual way or in standard time. After the autumn I've experienced, I'm anxious to welcome December knowing I'll have a few days' vacation during the holidays to hit reset and enter the new year less frazzled, more refreshed. It's the perfect time to open the cabinet and blend one of my favorites, Winter Solstice, a warm aromatic bolster for the coldest of evenings with just enough umph to awaken me from the post-Thanksgiving lull.
Begin with 4 oz. lavender hydrosol, or add a few drops of lavender to distilled water. To blend as a warming massage or bath oil, choose grapeseed or calendula oils. Add 10 drops of Essential Oils of Patchouli and Cardamom with 6 drops each of Essential Oils of Black Pepper, Vetiver, Nutmeg, Bergamot, and Pomegranate. Shake gently.
The blend is both spicy and calming since it includes Bergamot, which, like Lavender, is an adaptogen — an essential oil that can be either uplifting or calming as it helps the body adapt to stress. (In the words of one of my family's favorite jokes, "How do it know?") It's also a beautiful hostess gift when misted over a basket of pine cones and tucked inside as an after-party surprise. Enjoy!
